Why Does Laptop Price Vary from One Device to Another?

Two laptops can both say “Dell Core i5” and differ by EGP 10,000 or more. The processor name and the brand alone don’t tell you enough.

Processor and generation

A 10th or 11th Gen Core i5 is different from a 6th Gen Core i5. At Esterad, the Latitude 5400 (8th Gen) is EGP 8,699 and the Latitude 5410 (10th Gen) is EGP 9,899. That is two generations newer for EGP 1,200.

RAM and SSD storage capacity

8GB of RAM suits daily use and study, 16GB is better for programming and multitasking, and 32GB appears in professional devices. The Dell Latitude 7420 (11th Gen Core i7, 32GB RAM, 256GB NVMe SSD) is EGP 17,799, while 8GB study laptops start below EGP 10,000. For storage, a 256GB SSD is a good start and 512GB is more comfortable. Avoid HDD-only laptops.

Dedicated graphics card

This raises the price faster than anything else. A refurbished office laptop with integrated graphics costs EGP 9,000–10,000, while the Dell Precision 3560 (11th Gen Core i7, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD, Quadro T500 2GB) is EGP 21,099. If you only need Office, don’t pay for a graphics card you won’t use.

Screen, battery, and build material

An FHD screen usually costs more than HD, and touch or 2-in-1 screens add more. A metal, business-class body costs more than a budget consumer one with a similar processor. On used and refurbished laptops, battery health also matters: a battery at 85% is worth more than the same model at 60%.

Device condition: new, used, and refurbished

• New: never used, and usually the most expensive.
• Used: previously owned and sold in its current condition.
• Refurbished: previously owned, then inspected and prepared before resale.

Laptop Price by Use Case

Laptop for students and studying

The student laptop price doesn’t have to start at EGP 25,000. Refurbished options at Esterad:

Laptop	Specs	Price
Dell Latitude 5490	8th Gen Core i5, 8GB, 256GB SSD	EGP 7,899 (was 9,299)
Dell Latitude 5400	8th Gen Core i5, 8GB, 256GB SSD, 14" FHD	EGP 8,699 (was 10,199)
Dell Latitude 5410	10th Gen Core i5, 8GB, 256GB SSD, FHD touch	EGP 9,899 (was 11,599)

For general study, EGP 8,000–11,000 is the strongest entry point.

Laptop for business and office work

The same business class suits Excel, meetings, and CRM tools. For more multitasking, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon (16GB RAM, 14" FHD touch) is EGP 14,099. For 32GB of RAM, the Dell Latitude 7420 is EGP 17,799. Serious work laptops run from about EGP 10,000 to 18,000.

Laptop for gaming

The gaming laptop price is a different story, because the graphics card is the most expensive part. In the new market:

• Lenovo LOQ (RTX 3050, 16GB, 512GB): about EGP 39,600.
• ASUS TUF Gaming (RTX 3050): from about EGP 43,900.
• ASUS TUF Gaming (RTX 4050): about EGP 61,000.

A budget under EGP 20,000 will point you to an older used gaming laptop, not a new one.

Laptop for design and video editing

For light Photoshop and Illustrator work, a good business laptop with 16GB of RAM is enough. For Premiere, After Effects, and 3D, choose a dedicated graphics card. The Dell Precision 7540 (9th Gen Core i9, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD, Quadro T2000 4GB) is EGP 26,999 at Esterad, down from EGP 33,299.

Refurbished Laptop Prices Compared to New

There is no fixed percentage. The gap depends on the model’s age, generation, condition, battery, warranty, RAM, SSD, and graphics card.

The real price difference for the same specs

A refurbished laptop with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD starts at EGP 8,000–10,000, while a new mid-range laptop with 16GB and 512GB, such as the Asus Vivobook 15, costs about EGP 28,000. These are not identical specs, so compare model to model: generation, cores, RAM, SSD, screen, battery, graphics, condition, and warranty.

The difference between a used laptop and a refurbished laptop

A used laptop price can be lower because the device passes directly from its owner to you, without inspection or warranty. A refurbished laptop is inspected, tested, and prepared first. That makes it slightly more expensive than a private sale, but much less risky.

Warranty and inspection steps before sale

At Esterad, every laptop is inspected before delivery. The standard warranty is 3 months, extendable to a full year for EGP 999, with returns within 48 hours and exchanges within 14 days under the published policy. Before you buy, check the battery and SSD health, screen, keyboard, touchpad, USB and HDMI ports, Wi-Fi, camera, microphone, hinges, charger, and serial number.

Laptop Prices by Brand

The brand matters, but the series and model matter more.

Dell

Dell laptop prices start low because the Latitude is so common in company fleets. At Esterad: Latitude 5490 at EGP 7,899, Latitude 5400 at EGP 8,699, Latitude 5410 at EGP 9,899, Precision 3560 at EGP 21,099, and Precision 7540 at EGP 26,999. Dell covers everything from students to workstations.

HP

The HP EliteBook competes directly with the Latitude. The EliteBook 840 G5 (8th Gen Core i5, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD) is EGP 10,999, down from EGP 13,419. In higher tiers, the ZBook targets video editing, engineering, and design.

Lenovo

The ThinkPad is one of the best-known business lines in the used and refurbished market. The ThinkPad X1 Carbon (8th Gen Core i7, 16GB RAM) is EGP 14,099.

Apple MacBook

Apple laptops cost more, even refurbished. The MacBook Air M1 2020 (8GB, 256GB SSD) is about EGP 25,299–25,899 at Esterad, and a like-new MacBook Air 15-inch M2 with 16GB is EGP 47,299, down from EGP 58,409. For study and Office alone, a Windows business laptop is far cheaper.

Tips for Buying a Laptop at the Best Price

1. Define your use before your budget. For study and Office, don’t pay for an RTX card. For programming, spend on RAM, not graphics. For engineering, the graphics card matters more than weight.
2. Don’t chase the cheapest laptop in Egypt. The Latitude 5470 (6th Gen Core i5) is EGP 6,499, but the Latitude 5400 (8th Gen) is EGP 8,699. Saving EGP 2,200 to go back two generations is rarely worth it.
3. On refurbished laptops, focus on battery health and warranty more than appearance.
4. Compare upgrade costs. An EGP 9,000 laptop with upgradeable RAM can beat an EGP 12,000 one.
5. Don’t let the discount decide. Ask whether the price is fair for the specs and condition. That is how you get a laptop at an affordable price.

How much does a suitable laptop for students cost in Egypt?

EGP 8,000–11,000 buys a refurbished business laptop with an 8th or 10th Gen Core i5, 8GB of RAM, and an SSD. For programming with 16GB of RAM, plan for EGP 11,000–15,000.

How much cheaper is a refurbished laptop than a new one?

There is no fixed number. Refurbished business laptops start at about EGP 8,000–10,000, while new mid-range laptops with 16GB and 512GB start near EGP 28,000. Compare the exact model you want with its new equivalent.

What’s the difference between a used laptop and a refurbished laptop?

Both have had a previous owner. A used laptop may be sold directly without inspection; a refurbished laptop is inspected, tested, and prepared before resale.

Is it worth buying a laptop with an older-generation processor to save money?

Only if the saving is large and your use is light. The Latitude 5410 (10th Gen) costs just EGP 1,200 more than the Latitude 5400 (8th Gen), so the newer generation is usually the better buy.

Is there a warranty on refurbished laptops?

It depends on the seller. At Esterad, the standard warranty is 3 months, extendable to a year for EGP 999. Check the product page before you pay.

How much RAM and storage is enough for everyday use?

8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD for study, Office, and browsing. 16GB and 512GB for programming and heavy multitasking. For heavy design and editing, 16GB is the start and 32GB is better.
